How Often Should I Be Testing?

How often you should test your soil depends on a number of factors. The general rule for most average gardeners is to test soil once every three years. This is the amount of time it would take for your soil to experience natural changes, so you should make sure that all your numbers are accurate. If you don’t test your soil for ten years, you will be using inaccurate information in your gardening practices. However, there are some exceptions to the three-year rule, and you should test your soil more often for the following reasons. First of all, if you are trying to change the soil significantly, you should test again after implementing these major changes. You can target your tests to the specific changes you have made. So, if you are trying to alter the pH of your soil, you can just test the pH. However, keep in mind that all the elements of the soil affect one another. If you alter the pH with manure, then this will affect the drainage, the nutrient levels, and so on. You should also test again if there is a large natural disaster or anything else that might affect your soil’s elements. A big storm, flood, or drought can act as a reset for your soil, which might emerge with different qualities than before. Basically, test your soil once every three years, unless you suspect something has happened which could have significantly changed its composition.
